BRADWORTHY PRIMARY ACADEMY

Music

Music plays a very important part of life in our school, and we are very lucky to be able to work with several specialist teachers who support our work in this area.

Every child in school has access to music lessons within our curriculum teaching, and as you can see below, this programme has recently been updated to incorporate the DfE Model Music Curriculum.

We are committed to ensuring our pupils have a broad and balanced Music curriculum throughout their time in school.  Alongside the delivery of the National Curriculum for Music we are developing the implementation of the DfE Model Music Curriculum from Years 1-6, combining development of skills in singing, whole class ensemble teaching (WCET), composition, performance, listening, and musicianship.    Our overarching objectives include:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Musical Opportunities for Pupils

We are very pleased to be able to offer pupils the opportunity to learn to play a range of instruments and join musical ensembles during their time in school.    These include brass instruments, ukuleles, guitars (bass, acoustic and electric) and other instruments incorporated within our rock band.

Pupils in Y3-6 are offered ukulele / guitar tuition during their week in school, and pupils in Y3-6 are currently auditioning to take part in our brass group.

Rock band rehearsals currently take place on Monday and Wednesday after school, and Ukulele group practice takes place on Friday at 1pm.    Brass group rehearsals will be confirmed when the instruments have been issued to pupils in the near future!

In addition to these sessions, children attending our school have the opportunity to access private piano lessons provided by a specialist tutor.  These lessons can be arranged via the school office, and require a small additional payment.

If your child is keen to learn an instrument and isn't sure where to begin feel free to contact Becki Turner via sendco@bradworthy.devon.sch.uk or Alex Rushton via arushton@bradworthy.devon.sch.uk and we will do our best to help!
