  • Above Water

    Sat 15 Feb 2020 BT

On Wednesday 12th February we were lucky enough to be visited by Brendan Price, a lifeguard from the Torbay Surf Lifesaving Club, who visited to talk about the work of the charity Above Water, and to share his 25 years of lifeguarding experience!  Brendan gave an assembly to everyone in school, and then each class had a workshop session with him so that we could learn more about his work.

In the assembly the children were taught a lot about staying safe near water (although the main highlight may have been when Brendan poured water down Mrs Davies’ back)!  Following the assembly the workshops gave the children the chance to explore the equipment used, and complete some challenges to make them aware of the dangers that can be present around the water, along with issues such as cold water shock, waves and rip currents.

We would very much like to thank Brendan for giving up his time and coming in to school to share such important information with us.

  • Gymnastics Regional Competitions

    Sat 15 Feb 2020 BT

Every year we enter teams in the South West Regional Gymnastics Competitions, and it’s go to be said that simply producing gymnasts who are capable of competing at this level, let alone winning medals, is a great credit to the hard work our children put in, and to the amazing coaching they receive from our coaches Kerry, Sarah, Aaron and Claire.

The competitions involve floor routines and vaults, and in addition to this the trio competition involves a group display by either three or four gymnasts who work together to produce a floor routine.

It’s brilliant to be able to report the following results which are incredible.

    • Floor and Vault Mixed Team: Gold Medal
    • Boys’ Trio Team: Gold Medal
    • Mixed Trio Team: Silver Medal
    • Boys’ Floor and Vault Team: Silver Medal
    • Girls’ Trio Team: 5th Place (out of 12 teams)
    • Girls’ Floor and Vault Team: 4th Place (out of 12 teams)

As individual gymnasts, Ewan (Year Six) finished in silver medal position, and his brother Finley (Year Five) in bronze.
All of this means that we have qualified 3 teams for the National Finals in Stoke this year, where the top 16 schools from across Britain will compete against each other.

  • Climbing Competition

    Sat 15 Feb 2020 BT

On Thursday 13th February we held an in-house climbing competition for the children in Years 3 – 6.  Over 65 children were involved which was fantastic to see, and shows how popular climbing is amongst our pupils!

The children were split into mixed age teams, and were given climbing and bouldering problems to ‘solve’ during the course of the day.  Each route was scored for each climber, and the points were gathered at the end of the competition to determine the overall winning team.   At the end of the day a ‘speed climbing’ competition was held in the school hall, where everyone gathered to eagerly watch!  Each team nominated a climber to complete the speed climbing challenge and the spectators were treated to a fantastic series of climbs, with the tension increasing as climbers reached the top of the wall and rang the bell in increasingly rapid times!

At the end of the day our speed climbing winner, and our overall winning team were crowned, with Will from Year Six winning the speed climbing round in a phenomenal 31.66 seconds, and the ‘Squirels’ team winning the overall competition with an amazing 2115 points!

We must say a huge thank you to our climbing instructor Simon Young, and our amazing parent volunteers who worked incredibly hard to make the event run so smoothly.  It was a fabulous day with a wonderfully positive energy about the whole event – a real tribute to the wonderful children who took part.

  • Gliddon and Squire Finals 2020

    Sat 15 Feb 2020 BT

After another long, hard winter of competitions on Sunday mornings, it was great to see 30 runners from our school receive medals for completing the Gliddon and Squire Series of 6 Cross Country races.   This shows a real commitment, especially on days when the weather was terrible, and the face that everyone was willing to work together as a team was incredible to see.   We would like to thank Alan for another season of coaching our children, and if you look at the results it’s pretty obvious that he is getting a lot out of our runners.

    • Toby (Year Four)              Gold Medal
    • Adam (Year Five)             Fifth Place
    • May (Year Four)               Seventh Place
    • Eleanor (Year Six)             Tenth Place
    • Boys’ Under 11 Team     Silver Medal
    • Boys’ Under 9 Team        Bronze Medal
    • Girls Under 9 Team         Bronze Medal

The races involve competition between both schools and running clubs, and in addition to the results above we also received a trophy as the most successful boys’ school team in the competition.
