  • Surfing 2014

    Tue 30 Sep 2014

On Friday 12th September a group of class 6 children went surfing for the first time this year at Crooklets beach in Bude. On the way we were all very excited to learn how to surf.

When we got there, we met our two instructors Chris and Kieran. They gave us a wetsuit, rash vest and shoes. When we had got changed we went to get our surfboards. We carried them down to the beach.

After that we had a quick lesson on how to stand up on a surfboard. First of all you put your toes over the end. Then you get up on one knee, this is called the 'marry me' pose. Then turn your hips and stand up.

We also learnt where to be on the surf board and what the parts of the surfboard were called such as, tail, nose and fin.

Soon after our lesson we allowed to go in the sea and surf on our own. Some of us had already surfed before but some of us were total beginners. Most of us had help at the start but by the end we were doing it all on our own. By the end of the session some of us were standing up!

Most people enjoyed it so much that they are now doing the club. On the way back everyone said they had had fun and we can't wait for our next lesson.

  • Icebucket Challenge

    Tue 30 Sep 2014

Thank you to Chelsea and Laura (In Years Three and Four) for nominating us for the Icebucket Challenge last week.
As you can see from the photo and video clip we had a great time !!!

We had a raffle to choose the children who tipped the water over the lucky members of staff and raised £120 which is brilliant.

  • Morwenstow Autumn 2014

    Mon 29 Sep 2014

On Friday 12th of September, class 6 went to Morwenstow because we are learning about local history and geography.

First we learnt about R.S Hawker the vicar of Morwenstow Church. R.S Hawker had his own hut on a cliff above the beach, called Hawker’s hut.

Hawker’s hut is made out of ship wrecked wood. Hawker was a poet as well as a vicar, he was also well known for writing his poems in his hut. We spent some time writing our own poems.

Hawker was famous for rescuing shipwrecked sailors.

In Morwenstow church yard there is a copy of a figurehead that was attached to the Caledonia, a well known ship. The ship sank in 1842, (172) years ago.

On the corner of Morwenstow church there are corbels which are scary faces to keep the evil spirits away. There are also corbels on the inside of the church which are mounted on the archways. This is very unusual.
The oldest thing in the church is the font because it was built in Saxon times.

At the end of the day we all had a great time. We learned about R.S Hawker, the church and the Caledonia – it was amazing.

  • Jabberwocky 2014

    Tue 16 Sep 2014

On the 8th of September, class 5 went to with Mrs Turner, Mr Sentance and Mrs Brauns. We were so excited to learn about the Jabberwock.

First, Mrs Turner took the register and we all got our stuff ready. Mrs Turner sorted us into groups for the 2 mini busses and the car. Once we were sorted into our groups we jumped into our vehicles and set off to go to Rosemoor.

When we arrived at Rosemoor. We stepped out of our vehicles. Mrs Turner told us to get our stuff and then we set off to find our class room for the day. We found it and then we put our bags down and we were split into two groups.

One group went off with Mr Sentence and the other group went with Mrs Turner. Mr Sentence’s group went on to the path that leads under the bridge. He set us up with two pieces of paper, a clip board and a pencil. What we had to do was: we had to find some plants and leaves to draw, to think about ideas for our own tulgey wood. The leaves had to be all different shapes and sizes, mostly big, spiny, scary plants would be the best.

Back to Mrs Turners group, they all went into the deep, dark (a little bit of light) woods, they were on the hunt for a Jabberwock, a Bandersnatch, the Jub Jub bird, Borogoves, the Slithy Toves, Mone Raths and the Tum Tum Tree. We all split into groups of three or two and Mrs Turner gave each group a camera, a Jabberwocky booklet and a pencil. Each group went off to find evidence of a Jabberwock and the other creatures.    When we had looked for evidence and drawn some sketches of things that we had found we did some drama in the woods to help us get ideas for our writing.

When the 2 groups had both finished, they both went back to the class room and we all washed our hands and we had lunch.

After lunch, the 2 groups swapped over.

Lastly, we all met up at the class room, got into one long line and set off for the mini busses and this time a different car. We all jumped in and we set off back to school.

We are so glad we went on the trip.  We learnt loads about the Jabberwocky and we had a really good day at Rosemoor.

  • Autumn Kayaking

    Wed 10 Sep 2014

On Monday 8th September Class 6 went kayaking on Bude Canal, this was a taster session to see if we liked it. We travelled by mini bus and parked near the canal, next to the Bude Cub Hut.

Firstly we changed into our old clothes, then we chose the correct sized life jacket, after that we were all given a kayak which came in two sizes. We were shown how to get into our Kayak by sitting in the seat and putting our knees underneath so the kayak didn't capsize.

We leant how to do some strokes and then we played a game called 'stuck in the water' in our kayaks. The rules were:- if you got tagged you put your paddle up to say that you were stuck then someone would come and tap your kayak so then you could go.

Finally we paddled around the canal and had a “splash fight”, several kayakers capsized because they wanted to.

The session was thee hours of great fun and now we’re going to do a weekly club every week until the end of October.

  • Bikeability 2014

    Thu 04 Sep 2014

This year Class six have been doing 'Bikeabilty', an instructor called Ian came to teach us how to ride our bikes safely on the road.

We started off on the playground. The first thing we did in the playground was to practice starting safely. To start safely we had to hold our left and right breaks down, we had to put our pedal in a position where we could push off quickly and finally we had to look behind and start pedalling. After that, we practiced our emergency stop. To do an emergency stop you need to hold both breaks down, straighten your arm's then lean back on your seat.

Then we went to the village to practice on the road, where we worked on turning with a signal. For this you need to firstly do a safe start, and then look behind you, carefully making a signal to the way you're going with a straight arm. With fingers pointing outwards, we then look behind again, then turn.

Finally we went on a long bike ride which was four miles long. To start off with, we went down a big hill, but we then had to go up a even steeper hill! After a mile a sheepdog started to follow us. But Ian got a bit annoyed so he said to us we should cycle as fast as we can away from the dog.

When it was time to go home, we said good bye then went home knowing a lot more about cycling safely.  We all enjoyed doing Bikeabilty and we are looking forward to doing it again.
