  • North Devon Year 6 Boys Football Finals

Thu 21 Jul 2022 Elliot Lewis

On Wednesday the 20th of July I took a group of ten footballers, accompanied by parents who's support is always greatly appreciated, to the Year 6 North Devon Boys Finals at Park School in Barnstaple.

This is a tournament that our Year 6 side qualified for by winning a tournament in Torrington back in February. As our Year Sixes were busy having a fantastic time on Dartmoor, I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test our younger players against some of the best schools in the area.

The tournament was 7 aside, 12 minute matches, our young team consisted of seven players from Year 4, some of which are still eight years old, and three players from Year Five.

The boys played some fantastic football and displayed some really intricate and clever passing, the pace on the wings was impressive and some excellent displays of skill were shown. Unfortunately that wasn't enough to win matches and our players were physically not at the level of the other teams and couldn't get the results in matches we deserved.

I was hugely impressed with the attitude of the players, they didn't let up when goals went in and tried their absolute best despite the results not going their way. In terms of commitment the players couldn't be faulted, throwing themselves in the way of some hard shots and very big players to try and get the ball and block the goal.

Our final match was a success, a win of 3-1, which could've been more if not for the crossbar and the post, which allowed us to finish 5th overall in the Tournament.

I am incredibly proud of how the team performed, at the start of the school year none of these players had represented the school in a football match before and at the end of the year they are playing against some of the oldest and best in North Devon, two school years above them and holding their own.

I am incredibly excited to see how good this team will become over the next couple of years.

  • Exeter Year 3 and 4 Football World Cup

Thu 21 Jul 2022 Elliot Lewis

On Wednesday the 13th of July Sarah and I had the privilege of taking 8 players and some very keen and incredibly supportive parents/grand-parents down to Exeter for a year 3 and 4 Football Tournament.

Games were 6-aside, 10 minute matches.

Each school was given a World Cup country to represent, we must've drew the short straw as we ended up representing Wales.

Top three of the group went into the cup, 4-6  went into the plate. We finished 2nd place in our group stage, 6 games were played, we won four matches and lost two.

In the cruellest of scenarios we were eliminated on penalties in the quarter finals of the cup after a very late equaliser. To make matters worse, the two teams who went on and won the cup final and plate final we beat 1-0 and 5-0 in the group stage! I strongly believe we played the best football there and the free flowing, high scoring matches in the group stage against some massive Exeter and South Devon schools showed this.

  • Beach Soccer

Thu 21 Jul 2022 Elliot Lewis

On the 17th of June I had the pleasure of taking 8 players to Oceanfest at Croyde to play in a Beach Soccer Tournament.

The matches were 6-aside and played over 12 minute periods.

Our squad was a mixture of year 4s and 5s, which turned out to be the youngest squad there as it was a year 6 entry tournament.

We played fantastically well in a sport that is very different to conventional football, the ground is a lot harder to move in, the ball is heavier and the pitches are smaller. Shots can be taken from kick offs and throw ins were replaced by kick ins. Our keeper George Stephens was kept very busy due to this and made some outstanding saves.

We narrowly lost our first game 1-0, but played incredibly well for a first ever match, the remainder of our group stage games we won comfortably showing some excellent skills along the way.

Unfortunately we were knocked out of the tournament in the semi finals, in a narrow 1-0 defeat, by the eventual tournament winners.

As I said our squad was very young, but the experience gained by the players will be vital for next year when the same event will take place, I believe we are more than capable of doing better next year and getting our hands on that trophy.

The event was ran by Exeter City and Beach Soccer England, two of the England players were on sight watching the games, at the end of the tournament they each selected two players who stood out to them for how they played their game, I am immensely proud to say our very own Isabel Arnot was one of the players they selected, she was awarded a special medal and an England shirt for her efforts.

Very well done to Isabel and great work to all of the team!

Just south of Bristol, travelling well, due back just after midnight.

    See you soon.

  • London - Day Four

    Thu 07 Jul 2022 Richard

    Morning Everyone.

What a quiet night we’ve had!!!

    Happy Birthday Sam!!!

We’ve had a great morning which involved The Tate Modern, a tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and an acting workshop.

    We’ve just stopped for lunch.

Having briefly stopped by The Golden Hind, which was built in North Devon, we had a terrifying afternoon learning about the terrible history of London Bridge - and being chased by zombies!!!

We’re back at the hostel and after tea we’re off to the theatre for an equally terrifying evening when we’ll find out what happens at the end of The Woman in Black - which we’ve been studying in school.

We found a singer with a microphone in Covent Garden on the way to the theatre.

She led around 200 people in a rendition of Happy Birthday.

    Luck old Sam!!!

We’re back at the hostel after a brilliant night out and we’re having an early night (which means 11.30pm rather than midnight) ahead of an action packed day at Thorpe Park.

  • London - Day Three

    Wed 06 Jul 2022 Richard

No surprise at all that we had a very quiet night.

We had a slightly earlier start and are just leaving Westminster Abbey.

The weather is wonderful and we’re on the river where it’s nice and cool.

Lunch outside The Tower before an afternoon of terror and torture!!!

We’ve finished the day with a walk through China Town andbit of late night shopping after a stunning time at the theatre.

    Les Miserable was absolutely amazing.

Just gone midnight and we’re safely back in the hostel.

I think we’re about to set a new record for getting to sleep.

Fortunately we’ve got a later breakfast tomorrow morning.

  • London - Day Two

    Tue 05 Jul 2022 Richard

We’ve had a restful night and we’re on our way again.

We’re currently in the Natural History Museum.
We’ve done dinosaurs and insects and are heading for the Earth Galleries next.

Lunch in the park after a quick look at Buckingham Palace.

photos from the very top of St. Paul’s - what a view ….

…. and we all made it !!!

It’s gone 9.00pm and we’re into our second game of bowling -

    Guess Who’s Winning !!!

We’ve had a bit of a look at the city lights on the way back and we’re safely back in the hostel now - it’s not even midnight!!!

There are quite a few tired faces and I suspect we’ll be waking people up in the morning.

    More photos tomorrow.

  • London - Day One

    Mon 04 Jul 2022 Richard

It’s 12.30pm and we’ve made it to the coach park.

we’ll try and keep the photos coming.

We’ve had a bite of lunch and we’ve made it to the London Eye !!!

We’ve just walked up past Downing Street to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery where we’re having a great tour.

It’s just gone 6.00pm and as you can see from the photo we’ve made it back to the hostel for tea and a bit of a break before we head to the cinema later on.

Everyone is having a great time  - even if the city is a bit of a culture shock for some of us!!!

Just gone twelve and we’re all safely in bed and heading for sleep - which is pretty good going as we didn’t leave the cinema until 12.20pm.

We’ll be in touch again in the morning.
