  • Tennis

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Elliot Lewis

Over the past few weeks children in year 6 have been taking part in Tennis sessions with a coach from Atlantic Racket Centre.

The coach has travelled over from their mega tennis complex in Bideford to deliver some excellent Tennis coaching which the children have really enjoyed.

Alongside this, ARC sent over another coach to promote their programs to children in years 1,2 and 3. These three classes got the chance to take part in a special challenge, the challenge won them an invitation to their Super Tennis Weekend at the start of February, which I am thrilled to hear several children from our school took up that opportunity and went along.

Arc run great tennis sessions throughout the week and on the weekends for all school ages, if you're interested in what they have to offer I have attached a link to their website below.

  • Awards Assembly

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Elliot Lewis

Before Half Term the whole school gathered in the hall for an awards assembly.

Huge amounts of medals, certificates, trophies and so on were handed out to a large number of children for competitions they have either won or participated in.

Most of these awards were for sport that children have chosen to take part in, Football, Netball, Handball and Athletics, there were also awards for an in school art competition.

It fills me with great pride to see so many students so keen to involve themselves in as many opportunities as they can, well done everybody!

  • Year 4 Orienteering

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Elliot Lewis

Over a few weeks Class Four were split into three groups, the groups travelled on Thursday mornings to Castle Drogo.

Each student had a map in hand and were taught how to identify what they were seeing on the map using a range of skills. The route we walked is just over a mile and a half with a few challenging hills, so the test is also a physical one.

We also wanted the activity to work on team cooperation so we added a competitive element, we told each group they were being timed to see how fast they could reach the finish, each member of the team had to find 13 markers along the route which had 4 letters on to write down.

Mr Lapham and Elliot have been doing this for a number of years and were really impressed with how well the groups took to understanding the maps and finding the markers, all three groups we are pleased to say completed the course in under an hour. Well done team!

    Group 1: 58:31

    Group 2: 48:30

    Group 3: 43:13

Back to the Future: The Day the Music Died

Our Key Stage 2 pupils finally got the chance to perform our Christmas play last week - in the middle of February!  Unfortunately, due to illness we had to postpone this play twice, but it is safe to say the performances were well worth the wait.

We were thrilled to be able to perform to three packed audiences, and share all of our hard work with everyone.  Our Year Six pupils took centre stage, playing the leading roles with confidence and incredible amounts of talent.   Year Five made up our choir, and sang with amazing enthusiasm throughout the 90 minute performance.   Years Three and Four played parts in scenes set in the Basement Rebel DJ, and Smalville High's Championship Football Game, and we were blown away by their singing, and stage confidence.

It was wonderful to see all of the children throwing themselves into their performances, and we are incredibly proud of them all.  Thank you to everyone who came and watched, and for all of your kind words and encouragement!

  • Gliddon and Squire - Coxleigh Barton

Sun 05 Feb 2023 Becki Turner

Our amazing cross country teams were out again on Sunday morning, taking part in the penultimate race in the Gliddon and Squire series.  It has to be said that we were blessed with lovely weather for this race!

Once again the children ran brilliantly, showing real commitment and determination, and we are incredibly proud of them!

  • Christmas Carol Service

Sun 05 Feb 2023 Becki Turner

We had a very festive day at the end of the Autumn term, and following the disruptions caused by illnesses and bad weather we were very pleased to be able to go ahead with our Christmas Carol Service.

Everyone enjoyed singing festive songs, and it was lovely to be accompanied by our own musicians during the service! It was also a perfect opportunity to think about the meanings behind Christmas before the countdown to the big day!

  • Year 5 and 6 Football in Exeter

Fri 03 Feb 2023 Elliot Lewis

In the same week as the great success at Torrington, the team travelled to Exeter for another football tournament. The EFL Kids Cup is a magnificent opportunity for the team to test themselves against the best Devon has to offer, with most of the schools at the event coming from the Exeter area the size was significantly larger than us. I am reliably informed that several of the teams had Exeter City Academy players in their sides, showing the height of the standard.

The tournament was set into groups, with 32 teams attending, we had 5 teams in our group, 4 games.

The group stage results didn't go our way, we finished with 3 losses and a draw, two of the losses coming with really unfortunate last kick of the game goals and the draw was a game we were fully in control of, only to concede to a deflection that our keeper could do nothing about.

Fortunately for us our day didn't end there, the bottom three teams of each group head into a tournament for the plate whilst the top 2 go through to the cup. The set up was a straight knockout, 4 rounds to the final.

We won the first round 3-0, the Quarter final 2-0, the semi final 2-0 and then won the final 2-1.

I am so proud of the team for how they played, they really came into their own in the plate competition, we played some magnificent football, the players let the shackles off and showed what they can do, attacking with pace, creativity and power in their shots.

We also scored from set pieces, especially 2 really good headers, the referee commented saying our style was really exciting and that he hadn't seen any other sides try and use the kick in system so effectively and were the only team he had seen brave enough to try and score some headers.

This tournament is a yearly event and with the majority of our side coming from year 5 I am really excited to see the team try and go further next year.

    Fantastic work everybody, well done!

  • Year 5 and 6 Football at Great Torrington

Fri 03 Feb 2023 Elliot Lewis

On the 23rd of January nine students from years 5 and 6 travelled to Great Torrington to take part in a football tournament.

The tournament consisted of 7 teams, in an everyone plays everyone scenario, the matches were 6-aside with roll on/roll off substitutions, allowing for everybody to get a good amount of game time between them.

The scoring system for points was different to normal football, 5 points were awarded for a win, 3 for a draw and 1 for losing with less than half of the winning teams score, say a 1-0 loss would award a point, but a 2-0 wouldn't.

Our results were excellent, recording 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. When the tournament organisers read the final positions from 7th to 1st, the final two was us and the team we lost to, Westcroft. Fortunately for us their results elsewhere weren't as strong, we finished the tournament on 23 points, making us the champions.

I was delighted for the team, they were awarded medals for their efforts, this left the team in great shape with huge confidence going into their big tournament at Exeter later in the week.

    Well done team!
