  • Hartland Quay 2021

    Sat 26 Jun 2021 Richard

If you've been looking at our news items you'll know that Year Six have been spending a lot of time on Dartmoor this term. At over 600m the highest points of Dartmoor, such as Yes Tor, are officially high enough to be classed as mountains.

As you can see from these photos we've also been spending time visiting our coast.
Hartland Quay has some World famous rock formations and the general "lay-of-the -land" here means that we can study geology, and the way in which our landscape has changed recently and over hundreds of millions of years, really effectively.
It's an amazing place to use deduction to work out what ahs been going on - and using "brain-power" to work things out is much better than someone just telling you !!!

If we bring rivers into this loop we can join our mountains and the sea and start to see our environment as a "joined-up" cycle of events that both destroy and create our planet.

If you want to learn about geography you need to go "out-and-about" !!

  • Getting Ready to Camp - 2021

    Sat 26 Jun 2021 Richard

Our "Ten Tors Challenge" on Dartmoor is getting close and a big part of this is a two night wild camp on the moor.

As you can see from the photos we've been practicing putting up our tents and even more importantly we've also been cooking lots of different foods on our Trangia stoves so that we can prepare our own meals when we are out.

    Loads of fun !!!

  • Reception at the Dinosaur Park

    Thu 24 Jun 2021 Richard

Our Reception Class had a brilliant day at the Dinosaur Park.

They weren't that scared by dinosaurs but when they went on the Earthquake Ride and the dam burst, and a wall of water came towards them you could hear everyone's screams back in Bradworthy !!!

What an amazing way to spend a day.

  • More Time Spent on Dartmoor

    Mon 21 Jun 2021 Richard

As you can see from the photos Year Six have been spending a lot of time on Dartmoor preparing for our "Ten Tors Challenge".

Thankfully we've had quite a bit of good weather.

The only downside was a twisted knee on one of our trips, although we didn't have to bother Mountain Rescue thanks to a mile or so one one of our shoulders and luckily bumping into a couple of Dartmoor Rangers with a wheelbarrow !!!

  • Reception at Forest School

    Mon 21 Jun 2021 Richard

Our Reception children have always taken part in Forest School, which takes them out to local woods so that they can learn in a challenging and rewarding environment away from school.

In March 2020 covid put a stop to this and this has been a huge disappointment for both our children and staff.

When we cam back after Easter we were allowed to get out and about again and Reception have been visiting Squirrel Woods every Friday afternoon since then.

As you can see from the photos everyone has been having an amazing time.

  • Wakeboarding

    Sun 20 Jun 2021 Richard

Year Six have been going over to Th North Devon Wake-Park at the end of school each Monday afternoon this term.

We're having a great time challenging ourselves and, when it comes to kneeboards we're all getting around the lake - our current record has been set by Ruby who managed 14 laps in a row.
Once we can get around three times in a row on a kneeboard we can move up to a wakeboard which means standing up. Charlie was the first person to do a lap on a wakeboard although unfortunately know one was pointing a camera at him !

Sorry Charlie - we'll try and get a photo of you in action up soon.

  • Back on Dartmoor !!!

    Sun 20 Jun 2021 Richard

Straight after our return from our Easter Break we were allowed out of school again and Year Six didn't waste a single second in getting their "Ten Tors Dartmoor Challenge" underway.

This involves a series of training walks where we build fitness and develop the skills we need (including navigation) to operate safely in this extreme environment.
The final challenge involves a three day camp and a thirty mile walk.

As you can see the weather wasn't great - but we were out of school and didn't mind a bit !!!

  • Year One - Learning on the Beach

    Sun 20 Jun 2021 Richard

Year One have been taking full advantage of the fact that day trips are allowed again and have taken their learning out of their classroom and down to our local beaches each Monday morning this term.

It's obviously been an amazing set of experiences for them - even on days when the sun didn't shine !

  • Year Two in the Middle Ages

    Sun 20 Jun 2021 Richard

To mark the end of a very busy half term, we celebrated with a special Medieval Day. The children (and adults) dressed up for the day as knights, servants, kings, queens and princesses, we even had a donkey. In the morning we made mini catapults, and enjoyed lots of activities in the classroom. After performing our Medieval dance, we feasted on a banquet in the school hall. In the afternoon we all went outside and had team hobby horse races, jousting tournaments, practiced catapulting missiles into a castle and lots of play. There may have been a few sword fights but thankfully nobody was injured. The children said it was the best day ever, and Jo and Mrs Carey agreed ...

... and, what's even better, is that everyone was able to go down to Okehampton Castle to explore a real medieval castle.
Everyone had an amazing time !!
